Minister of Tourism David Collado announced a technical learning institute will open in Punta Cana to further the training of hotel and tourism staff. Punta Cana has over 300 hotels in a beach stretch of more than 100 km from north to south and across three eastern provinces – La Altagracia, El Seibo and Hato Mayor. The new technical-professional learning center would prepare the staff including bartenders to management for the expanding tourism destinations of Punta Cana in La Altagracia province and Miches in El Seibo province to the north.

Over 800 travel agencies, tour operators, hotel operators, resorts and hotel suppliers participated in the DATE 2024, the 24th edition that took place 24-26 April 2024.

I wonder how it will rank as far as the world’s tourism schools go?

Chavón School of Design, with campuses in La Romana and Santo Domingo, is arguably the best art/design school in Latin America. For a time or still do had a relationship with NY’s Pason School of Design, one of the best of its kind in the world.

Barna Management School is based in Santo Domingo is probably the best of its kind in the Caribbean, perhaps in Latin America.

These things need to be known so these places of learning become prime places for the top people from throughout Latin America and perhaps the world choose to attend these places.

The one thing they do have in common is that they are private initiatives, but there is no reason some of the government schools can’t associate with the best in the private sector to make these places among the best in the world.

There is no reason that, for example, the Santo Domingo Cyber Park in Boca Chica can’t become the best in the world for getting such education and have many students from around the world choose to attend these places. These places would also become the choice for the best professors in their field from around the world.

These places should become the “Ivy Leagues” of their fields. With time these places could become a sort of resorts for their students by having housing, dining options, libraries, etc on a new or current but expanded campus grounds. The DR could become known for many other things in addition to all inclusive resorts, the world’s top cigars, etc.

Simply in the amount of taxes the DR government would get from this makes it worth it to aspire to become the world’s best and most sought after places.

This was my first thought as well... Some years ago a member of my family headed up the food preparation department of a leading hospitality training center in Jamaica... But it was a struggle to produce top-rated graduates, as the view of the government (who it was under the purview of) was that it be operated as a sort of tourism industry low-income job personnel production line... Which was the demand of the many private hoteliers.

Kind of like a tail-wagging-the-dog scenario... Albeit, in this case, over the years the tail provided 20%-30% of Jamaica's GDP.

You said... "These places should become the “Ivy Leagues” of their fields."

And that should be the goal... But the goal of Ivy League schools is to produce the top people in the workforce... Not the low-income workers... Typically, top people in the tourism industry tend to be trained in foreign institutions, not local ones... And are often foreigners.

Yet, the world of education is certainly changing, and high-level training is more easily available to all... Or should be... And governments should take the lead in propagating a best-in-class education system for the citizens they work for... Which requires that the government realize that they do work for the citizens, and not the other way around.

And I understand that not everyone is cut out to be a top-level worker... And that there aren't tens of thousands of top-level worker jobs available... But the facility should be there for those who aspire to a higher level, and unfortunately, government initiatives usually fall short in this.

NALs, your above comment stirred up my desire to find out more about the whole industry of trade/vocational education, and I'm glad it did, as there are some very interesting and positive trends and developments taking place within it... In related programs, financial considerations, and growth.

Anyone interested in doing some research, try starting with a Google search term of "trend toward trade schools".
