    Let's talk health insurance!

DRpeson, which of your companies offer these special rates/plans? I'm retired US Air Force, age 61 this October. If you prefer, you can send me a message with info or questions

International Money Transfer - US/CAN to DR

If using Caribe Express to send or receive, someone has to step foot inside at some point! Personally, I've had little problems when exchanging with them in Jumbo Puerto Plata, but I avoid those "payday dates" we all know about. I've found that doing a larger wire transfer in USD to my bank...

International Money Transfer - US/CAN to DR

Remitly has a great promotional rate for new customers, as you can see in this example. However, today's standard rate is only 57.22, not 58.something.

I couldn't find similar info on Domex website, but the same probably applies. Best to call and find out for sure

International Money Transfer - US/CAN to DR

The one and only time I used them was a couple years ago and it took a month for the transfer. I don't recall why now, but suffice it to say that was enough for me.

International Money Transfer - US/CAN to DR

For transferring USD for USD, Cavok is correct but Remitly is really close to WU in the fees. Worth checking them both, perhaps depending on the amount transferred, Remitly could come out ahead. I compared for $1000 USD. However, if your goal is to exchange those dollars for DOP upon arrival...

International Money Transfer - US/CAN to DR

Remitly gives a very nice exchange rate on the first $500 for new customers. After that, they lag behind what you might find locally here. Not a big deal for smaller occasional transfers. XE is another option, but don't be fooled by the rate they show on the initial page of their website...

Renting a car in the USA using a DR Driving Licence

I didn't mean to pass off the cedula as the DL. I meant the format is probably about the same, so Google Translate should work for translating the DL into English too. Sorry for the confusion, I can see how what I wrote wasn't clear

Too Many Cars - what will the government do?

The government is involved in the financing and ferias?

Renting a car in the USA using a DR Driving Licence

Just for grins, I just now tried Google Translate on a photo of my cedula, and it worked well. I'm guessing a DL looks a lot like a cedula, so it would be easy enough to do this and keep the translation on a phone just in case. Foolproof, no, but at least it's free!

Renting a car in the USA using a DR Driving Licence

An International Driving Permit is NOT a requirement, only recommended as noted above by many car rental agencies. You can get one in the Dr...see my post #11 (just saw someone else replied and posted a link for this too...sorry about that)

    Dominican Foods

Several chili recipes call for a tablespoon or two of peanut butter. As this red bean recipe isn't spicy, maybe go with one and see what you think.

Moving back to DR (north coast) when I retire: do or don't

OP does mention a chronic condition requiring daily medication, and wondering the cost of those meds here. As he has family here, I'm sure they can ask in a farmacia...that answers that. Maybe hospital availability isn't the issue, at this point anyway. Your "righty ho" made me laugh!

BTW, an International Drivers Permit for a DR license is 5900 pesos - ouch! https://internationaldrivingpermit.org/country/dominican-republic/
