As an American working abroad in 3rd world countries for the past 15 years, it had some relevance. Nonetheless, good fundamental advice anywhere in the world.
As an American working abroad in both 1st world and developing countries for the last 18 years, I agree.
I would say that it applies to many young ladies here, too.

The large extended family stopped coming to greet me at the airport when the gifts stopped. Coincidence?
