Moving back to DR (north coast) when I retire: do or don't

I can't imagine he has enough solar panels to power the AC units for a hotel, and I can't imagine a hotel without AC

Oh wow! More news from BBQ

The Taliban rule Afghanistan fiercely, a lot of stuff is completely illegal (including women working and studying, listening to music, the list goes on and on). The country has been plunged into complete poverty and a lot of people are starving. The gangs in Haiti are, in effect, making a...

Moving back to DR (north coast) when I retire: do or don't

I don't think even in Santo Domingo there is fresh running water. Everyone gets water two or three times a week and stores it either in a tinaco or in a cisterna (a big well under the house). Some people have wells that can be used for water. But nobody drinks water from the faucet...

Moving back to DR (north coast) when I retire: do or don't

Of course. And then you forget that you bought a particular pair of shoes three months ago and you buy them again. And then keep both pairs in any case.

Oh wow! More news from BBQ

That's strange because according to this article in the BBC, Barbecue is far from the most powerful of the gang leaders. Just the most vocal. Or maybe it changed since they wrote the article: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-latin-america-68534619 Where is this all going to end? That's...

Moving back to DR (north coast) when I retire: do or don't

By the way, where on earth would one purchase a handbag on the north coast? Gotta have a bag to match the shoes, that is the law. And make-up? I'd have to have a truck-load of goodies delivered every month to survive up there.

Of course she did. We are hard-wired to purchase shoes.

Moving back to DR (north coast) when I retire: do or don't

The OP started his post saying he had medical problems. So I would have thought availability of hospitals would be a thing. And you're seriously asking me how often I need to shop for clothing, she of the multiple walk-in closets and over 100 pairs of shoes? Righty ho

Moving back to DR (north coast) when I retire: do or don't

Sounds like advice from someone who has lived and worked in DR for over 12 years, speaks Spanish fluently, has Dominican family and has zero communication with expats other than on here.

Moving back to DR (north coast) when I retire: do or don't

Fine, I am a little confused as to why you posted a question, people have given you their answer, and you then argue with them. How many good hospitals are there on the NC? How many decent supermarkets are there? How many clothes shops are there (apart from shops selling beachware)? How...

Moving back to DR (north coast) when I retire: do or don't

The panels will not be enough to power a microwave, a freezer or an AC unit. The only way to power those is a generator. Returning to your OP, you asked whether it is sufficient to go on vacation to the DR or whether you should live there full time. My opinion is still that if you...

Moving back to DR (north coast) when I retire: do or don't

I agree that there are some amazing beaches on the NC and Samana peninsula, and I agree that the countryside is stunning around the center of the island. Which is wonderful for a visit. But if you live there? With no shops, no hospital, problems with the water, problems with the...

Moving back to DR (north coast) when I retire: do or don't

100% agree with all of this. Last time I was in Cabarete we ran out of mushrooms and wanted some for breakfast. Janet's did have any, so the solution was to go without. That would never happen in SD, I have maybe 20 huge supermarkets within a 15 min drive. When I was in Cabarete I got...

The complete chaos in immigration at Las Americas SDQ airport

I have an idea. I read the Flyertalk forum and there are some threads on there, for example ones about lounge access, which always stay open on the site but they are strictly moderated and anything which is OT is immediately removed by the mods. I think it would be an idea to have threads...

Still searching for a payroll and tax accountant....

I would recommend to the OP that he / she posts on Aldaba.com, in English, which is a good recruitment site for DR. State that you're looking for an experienced payroll person with English. It's important to estimate the number of employees they will be paying, the number of hours per week...

Still searching for a payroll and tax accountant....

Clearly you've never done Dominican payroll. Especially if he is going to set up a business which involves paying a Propina Legal, that would involve 3 separate pay calcs / runs per month. Payroll in DR is complicated, lots of little things to remember and no chance to correct anything if...

Moving back to DR (north coast) when I retire: do or don't

Exactly this. Every time I go to Cabarete I die of boredom after 4 days. Especially if it rains. One supermarket, so if they're out of stock you don't buy it. And yes the beach is nice but there's only so much walking up and down and up and down and up and down a beach a woman needs...

Massive traffic jams in Santo Domingo; overflowing rivers in the north

The last time it rained that heavily it took me two hours to do a journey that would take 8 minutes on a no-traffic day. Absolute madness. The river actually overflowed its banks yesterday near to the floating bridge, I've never seen that before.
