We are in need of a professional plumber for some work at a condo in Cabarete. We previously called someone and he had very few tools, carried no supplies and apparently was more of a general handyman. We concluded he wasn’t up to the task. Thanks.

Good luck, ever since Pedro (from Switzerland via Florida) left the Cabarete area and returned home , we have not found one.

If you do find one it would be great to know about him.

Professional in DR is a word not used much. I suspect you will not find one trained to the standards you expect from home.
Watch the workers carefully because they are hit and run specialists for the most part.
It is worth it to hire an expat with real tools and who knows how to clean up behind himself

I've noticed that more with auto mechanics. Every guy thinks he's an expert.

We have a guy here who is self trained for both plumbing and electrical work. Can't say enough good things about him. Would recommend to the OP if we were closer.

Every once and a while...
This past year I used quite a number of tradesmen. As far as a plumber this is second one I used during this renovation. This week he showed up with a work bag of tools. He installed three toilets. Two of them he had to get to the second floor. And two sinks upstairs and one sink and vanity on first floor. He unboxed everything and broke down the boxes for trash. He supplied everything that was needed to do the installation.(All I gave him were the items in cartons and the faucets.
Cost $225.

So true, unlike in many "modern" countries, there are no standards here, each one does it at his best knowledge.

Keyword for this post "self trained". That's why there's no standards, either they have just started on their own house or friends' and neighbors' and little by little "learned" how to do it or a family member has "taught" them. But I still have not found a "good" plummer/electrician etc. Everyone is so so and has their own ideas of how things are done the best way.

Completely agree, but this guy (Nestor) is great. Recommended by my landlady almost 4 years ago. Never had a problem with him. Everything he has touched has worked to perfection, both electrical and plumbing.

Is Nestor on the North Coast?

This is the North Coast sub forum.

Thanks to everyone who responded. We ended up going with a recommendation from a local business. The guy showed up on time, had tools but certainly was not skilled to the level we would recommend him to others. He was also a little more pricey than we were expecting as well.

They know how to glue pvc pipe together that's about it.
I had been in my house for about 15 years and the house was probably already 10 years old. One day, with no rainfall in the past several days, there was a couple of inches of standing water in part of my side yard. I found a place where water was bubbling up to the surface, dug down just over a foot, and uncovered a right angle connection of two plastic tubes that were held together only by small pieces of rebar driven next to them to "hold them in place".:oops:. No pipe cement at all. Now the rest of my house is built like the proverbial Brick SXIT House, so this was curious.

A surge in water pressure probably separated the tubes after many years, and I had to glue them properly (instead of using rebar this time;)) . I mean what was that about?

After Pedro left the DR, when there is a problem we find someone to do the hard work if digging or chiseling into concrete is needed, and supervise that the connections are done well.

I once told a plumber to use caution when applying PVC cement because I didn't want to see dried PVC cement all over my fittings.

He told me that was not possible.

Indeed, some think it works by applying it on the outside. No need to ever speak to them again.
